Location: Gregory Drive/ South Quad/ University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
The New Rare Book Library of the University of Illinois would protect and give home to valuable treasure that have been the legacy of centuries of history. The building design would utilize and maximize the diffuse natural light of the north side of the building. The concept is to have an adequate, and efficient place to study, contemplate and keep prolonging the life of these delicate pieces of art. The main stack area is easily visible from users and at the same time a showcase that protected the books in a controlled environment. The building design uses the University favorite material palette such as red brick, steel and reinforce concrete. Its location is in the South Quad near to the Undergraduate Library and Graduate Library keeping it in the heart of the University. This allows the student to have an easy access to it by the use of public buses, walking, cycling and/or car. This building has four times as much space in comparison to the existing Rare Book library of UIUC. The space is divides in the main stack room, a display area, auditorium, reference book, staff offices, and private reading room.
