MSALAZARDESIGN is my independent design consulting company, whose main purpose is to provide and create innovative design solutions for individuals and companies.

About Miguel Salazar, M. Arch and B.A.

I hold a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico.

I have gained professional and academic experience in different environments.

I worked as a drafter for Sanchez-Feliberty & Associates, Architects, and Engineers & Planners. Some of my duties included interpreting and correcting construction documents. I was also in charge of drafting plans and electrical grids for a fire station and a high school using AutoCAD. I participated in the dynamics meetings of the firm, where engineers, architects, and associates were involved in the creation of a sound design for our clients.

I believe that in order to be able to design well, you have to possess a solid understanding of construction work methods, properties of materials, available technologies, and structural design. I incorporated all these elements while being part of the University of Illinois’ Solar Decathlon Team. As a member of that team, I actively participated in the construction of two sustainable solar houses for the Solar Decathlon, “Element House” (UIUC 2007) and “Gable Home” (UIUC 2009). “Element House” won two first prices in the categories of comfort zone, and market viability. Among other prizes, “Gable Home” was awarded second place in the overall competition. I also help to document visual information of the building construction for the website, and organize construction cost analysis of the project.

I have also participated directly in academia. I had the privilege to teach two sophomore-level courses Graphics for Architect (Arch 271) and Strategies for Architects Design (Arch 272) at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois. In these courses, I introduced my students to the foundations of design and graphics communications.

My work is a source of passion and joy!

I have been involved, both as a practitioner and proactive learner, in several branches of art expression. Areas such as painting, drawing, sculpture, digital media, photography, drama, runway modeling, video, animation, music, scenography, and dance are features of art expression that comprise my multiple interests. My lines of work also help me find ways to intersect these artistic interest with my professional training as an architect.

People, nature, sciences and art are a constant source of inspiration in my daily life. One of the purposes of my work is to elevate human life conditions with the creation and enhancement of spaces that can be meaningful, functional, and beautiful.
